Elegant Music Jazz Trio plays Dinner Dance

The word “hallelujah” is an ancient Hebrew phrase that means “praise the Lord”. It’s made up of two parts: “hallel”, which means “to praise”, and “yah/jah”, which is a shortened form of the Hebrew name for God, “Yahweh”.

Some say the song “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen is about the struggle between having human desire and searching for spiritual wisdom.

I think the expression and use of this word can be summed up in the triumph of the “Hallelujah Chorus” by composer George Frideric Handel from his iconic work “Messiah”.

Choosing music…

It is an absolute joy to work with artists. Valerie and Gary are very creative people and being true to their vision produced a beautiful wedding.

Essentially a couple “chooses” music they like. Their music means something to them. Their choices of location, food, decor and yes, “music” all come together and are a reflection of “them”.

It is always an adventure to work with creative couples and being invited to help them celebrate. More about this wedding in future posts.

“What is Elegant Music to you?”

This question was asked of me by American actor and comedian Morey Amsterdam.

Sheila and I were performing at a bridal show at the Bel Air hotel when Mr. Amsterdam walked up to our booth…

He picked up one of our business cards and looking at it said, “Elegant Music!”

And then asked, “What is Elegant Music to you?”

Music is a big subject. There are a variety of ways to simplify the process of planning music for a celebration. See: “Music” and “Dress” for the Occasion.

The setting of a celebration is a composition of art forms.

Composing music is very creative. In creating the setting for a celebration art forms are combined becoming part of the composition; an expression of beauty and purpose. Its success is an accomplishment worthy of acknowledgment!

The Elegant Music Quintet is a unique sounding ensemble. Each instrument has unique qualities that contribute to the sonority (variety of sound) and versatility of this ensemble. Together these instruments provide a colorful palette inviting exploration by the composer, musician and listener. The adage coined by Greek philosopher Aristotle “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts” is certainly true of this ensemble.

Instrumentation: Flute, Violin Cello, Piano and Harp.
