Selecting Music and the Creative Process
Hello: Eric Zimmermann here. I like all kinds of music. One of my favorite things to do is to help someone plan music for their special event. I find that planning music for an event is almost as much fun as it is performing for the event.
Each event is unique and because no two people are exactly alike there are many interesting viewpoints on music. In addition, the occasion influences the choice of music. The location may have an influence; the theme of the event, the guests attending and even “what’s for dinner” could guide the programing of music for that event. Now let’s expand that to include music over the last 100 years!

We had fun at the Pasadena Garden Club “Centennial” Celebration.
I was charged with the task of performing music from the last hundred years (1916 through 2016). Each committee member was assigned a decade to choose music from and to pass their favorites on to me. As I was receiving the lists several members made comments to the effect that they found so many great songs that it was hard to exclude any. Indeed my final list was long enough for 3 parties! With so much great music out there I realized that it would be possible to have a series of theme parties featuring food, fashion and popular music from each decade.
Listening Party – Adventure and Exploration
Actually it would be a lot of fun to have a small get-together where we bring our technology (phones, pads and laptop computers) and go on the internet and explore a decade of music. It would be like having a small party to plan music for a bigger party. Again we would probably come up with more songs than we would have time for. What with iTunes, Pandora and Spotify I am sure we would be finding and playing some very interesting music.
As a DJ and a Pianist and writing for Chamber Music Quartet and Jazz Trio I am finding more and more that there is an infinite variety of music out there and it is very much an adventure exploring it.

Sincerely,
Eric Zimmermann

PS: Not to scare you on Halloween but recently we have received the “gift of rain” and “cooler weather” an indication that the Holidays are already upon us. I will be having fun playing Solo Piano music on the beautiful Steinway grand piano at the Valley Hunt Club on Thanksgiving.
Sincerely, Eric Zimmermann
