Talking about music is an adventure, and why not it’s a big subject! Leonard Bernstein wrote a book titled “The Infinite Variety of Music” that title alone pretty much sums up the scope of any discussion about music. I had the unique opportunity to speak with celebrity Morey Amsterdam from the Dick Van Dyke Show about music and he asked me “what is elegant music to you?”
In planning music for an event it is a good idea to have a sketch of the event. This way you can look it all over and see where music will be wanted. I think music should progress as the event progresses. There is a natural sequence to an event and there are necessary activities that occur within any successful event.
So getting ideas, seeing how parts relate to other parts and envisioning how it will all come together leads us back to the planning process and a working itinerary sketch. See: A Full Evening of Entertainment

Planning Music for a Party – Planning Backwards
Along with securing your location you can predict the time frame of your event. A cocktail party can be from 2 to 3 hours. A dinner party could be from 3 to 4 hours. A wedding for an example having several parts: ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner and dancing would normally fit into a 6 hour block of time, or more. An experienced event designer can predict what would be the necessary activities and flow of a particular event and guide the planning process accordingly.
Now I am not a special event coordinator. However, to have a productive discussion about music I find it helpful to have a sketch of how the event might go. And I have to say, that planning music for a special event is creative and just as much fun as performing for one. I look forward to hearing your ideas.
