“Style” Jazz at a Wedding

Getting dressed up and showing some style is all part of planning any event. The juxtaposition of Location, Dress, Music, dynamically contribute as do decor & design. These elements are so much fun to play with when planning an event.

The Rat Pack

Speaking of “style” Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis and the rest of the “Rat Pack” established a style that inspired motion pictures like Oceans 8, Oceans 11, 12 & 13. Music and fashion are important design elements of these movies.

Here is the humorous song “Style” featuring Sinatra, Martin & Bing Crosby from the 1964 motion picture “Robin and the Seven Hoods”.

The Great American Song Book

“The Way you Look Tonight”, “Sway”, “Fly Me To The Moon” were popular contemporary songs (back in the day) that were made famous by performing artists such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and others. These timeless melodies (Standards) comprise a collection affectionately known as “The Great American Song Book.”  In addition to playing selections from “The Great American Song Book” the Elegant Music Jazz Trio also performs Jazz Covers of popular contemporary music.

What makes an event successful?  Great food, beautiful surroundings, music?

A successful event is determined by “enjoyment”.

There is creative enjoyment in designing and planning the event.  Guests enjoy being there for the host.  The host enjoys seeing guests enjoying the company of each other.  Collectively they enjoy meaningful toasts, great food, beautiful surroundings and yes, music.

Here is a “Thank You” note we received by e-mail from just such an event:

“Hi Eric, We just want to thank you again and repeat how much we appreciated your music at our Anniversary Party. It was perfect both in the selection of music and the way it fit with our schedule and program. It was unusual in my experience that the most frequent compliment I heard as our guests prepared to leave was about the enjoyable music.

Chariot Races @ The Rose Parade, Pasadena Celebrates!

Tradition

By studying history and tradition we have the opportunity to learn about actions that have proven successful and this data can help us navigate the future. In order for an idea to become a tradition it must be a good idea. A brief look the history of The Tournament of Roses Parade is a study in the success of a very good idea.

Valley Hunt Club

Members of the venerable Valley Hunt Club established the first Pasadena parade in 1890. At the time many of the members of the club were former residents of the American East and Midwest. They wanted to showcase the weather of their new California home. At a club meeting, Professor Charles F. Holder announced, “In New York, people are buried in the snow. Here our flowers are blooming and our oranges are about to bear. Let’s hold a festival to tell the world about our paradise.”

Activities soon included ostrich races, bronco busting, and an odd novelty race between a camel and an elephant. (The elephant won the race.) and the rest they say is history; Pasadena History.

Pasadena Museum of History

In addition to providing music for parties. Elegant Music also performs at weddings.  So we were the first in line to perform for the Wedding Gown Exhibit at the Pasadena Museum of History.  See:  “I Do!  I Do!  Pasadena Ties The Knot.”

Hello, My name is Eric Zimmermann.  I am a DJ and Master of Ceremonies, Pianist, Band Leader and Host of Wedding & Event Podcast.  I perform for parties and weddings in some of the most beautiful locations in Los Angeles and throughout Southern California.

 

Beautiful Things

Anyone could cram a lot of beautiful things into a room. I guess you would then have a museum.

But what contributes to an atmosphere where everyone feels welcome and has a good time?

It has been my pleasure to perform at some of the most prestigious private clubs throughout Southern California. These are stunningly beautiful locations steeped in tradition. There you will find the finest food and beautiful decor. What could be added to all of that? What makes it all come alive?

Welcome? or Not Welcome?

I am sure it has never happened that you walk into the Post Office or DMV for example and were ignored by the attendant. I don’t wish that on anybody; that’s not a good feeling. This could happen anywhere and sometimes does. I suppose the attendant may be preoccupied in thought and didn’t notice someone just walked in or that you have been standing there waiting.

Essential Human Aspect

In contrast, what is most apparent to me about the finer clubs is the level of “interest” that accompanies “great service” by dedicated staff who really care.

Even before entering the club this quality can be observed in meeting the valet parking attendant, doorman, and the receptionist; they are interested in you. This is something special. A quality different than mere beautiful surroundings. And yes, this is certainly the opposite of being ignored. You could say this comes under the heading of “essential human aspect.”

The Host

Looking closer I observed another even more personal and yes essential interaction initiated by “the host.” This is someone with deft communication skills who comes to the table and cordially greets guests. He conducts himself as a gentleman with perfect manners. He is warm and friendly and genuinely interested in the guests at the table he is visiting. His communication is very light and cheerful; he is there only a short time. When he leaves the table, the guests he briefly spoke to are happy and interacting with each other.

Magic

When appropriate, I apply this when I perform as a solo pianist at restaurants. Before I start playing I observe the guests at their tables and determine whether or not they are engaged in conversation; if they are conversing I do not interrupt them. But let’s say guests at a table are not so engaged; lost in thought or possibly looking at their phones. I say hello, and introduce myself as the pianist for the evening. Usually I receive their music requests.  Then during the evening I’ll play their request. It is as simple as that. I have found the result to be quite magical.

 

How could you apply this? This is actually natural to do.

Today when going about your business “show interest” in the people you meet. You will brighten their day and yours.
