Please pardon me for stating the obvious but, “each person is unique.”
Music preference varies widely from person to person. There is such a variety of music that is enjoyed it is nearly impossible to make one “song list” that represents what everybody likes to listen to or dance to for every occasion.
Hi my name is Eric Zimmermann. I am a DJ and Master of Ceremonies, Pianist and Band Leader.
When planning music for a wedding or party it is a good idea to make your own list of favorites but then also wise to consult your guests and “party animals” who will be attending. The idea is “to get wide agreement” of what your audience wants to hear. Being that there are several parts to a special event your list can be organized into categories and programed to be performed at the proper time throughout the event for the greatest effect.
As a DJ and professional musician it is quite an adventure for me to talk with people about music they like. Some years ago I recall my wife and I performing Flute and Piano music at the Belair Hotel when a very interesting “character” walked up and asked for a business card and looking at our company name asked, “Elegant Music!” “What is elegant music to you?” Now this interesting character seemed rather eccentric and had an entourage with him, I thought him as very intelligent; it was a very good question; his demeanor was sincere. I said, “Well, in the dictionary the definition of Elegant is “of a high grade or quality” that the derivation of elegant is from Greek “ēligere” which means to “elect” “select” or to “choose” …that “elegant music” would be “chosen music” or “select music chosen by the individual.” His eyes widened. “So what is elegant music to you?” he asked again. I said, “well the music of Bach and Mozart is certainly elegant music but so is the music of jazz pianist Oscar Peterson, that tangos and motion picture themes, anything done really well could be elegant music.” Excited he asked, “what about music by Ella Fitzgerald?” Sure, and I added Carmen McRae and he added Della Reese. I added, Sarah Vaughn and he added Count Basie. “Exactly!”, I said.
We went on enthusiastically talking about the music we liked and the performances we had seen. He then warmly shook my hand, thanked me and walked away. After he left one of his entourage came over and asked, “Do you know who that was?” and I said, “I don’t know, but I thought it was some guy trying to act like Morey Amsterdam (from the Dick Van Dyke Show). He smiled and said no, that was Morey Amsterdam!
