I started thinking about Easter and what music might be included in the “sound track” for this celebration. Optimism, renewal, a new beginning and just plain fun.

It is amazing the infinite variety of music possible with solo piano. As a pianist the keyboard is like an orchestra at my fingertips; I can play just about play anything.

 

Any melody, any song, any Christmas Carol, even “Happy Birthday” can be found somewhere on the piano keyboard.

 

 

The piano can play and sustain many notes at one time. So melody and harmony and rhythm are played by this single instrument.

 

With piano it is possible for a single performer to entertain hundreds of people.

 

Beauty And The Beast (Jazz Waltz) Solo Piano

 

Out doors or in locations where an acoustic piano is not available. It is easy to bring a keyboard and small amplification.

 

Talking about music with another starts an adventure of discovery.

 

Adding your favorite instruments to piano expands the variety of music possible exponentially.

Elegant Dinner Party, Home Entertaining

The weather is getting warmer.

Things are looking up.

I am playing more parties :-)

 

Isn’t it time to have a party?

Live music in your living room or back yard.

Everyone should have a piano in their living room…

and I don’t know why everyone doesn’t have a piano in their backyard ;-)

Actually, fine instruments should be kept indoors.

 

Solo piano is perfect entertainment for a house party, cocktail party or dinner party. Solo piano helps set the mood. Solo piano is “live entertainment”.

Don’t have a piano? Don’t let that stop you from having a party. If you don’t have a piano I will bring mine; I have several great sounding portable keyboards that honestly sound better than some acoustic pianos I have played.

I recently played a party at a newly renovated private club in Los Angeles. The host requested that I play music from “The Great American Song Book”. Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin…

What’s more fun than solo piano?

For me, it’s performing with other musicians. By the way, Elegant Music started with my wife Sheila and I performing Flute and Piano music together; that was over 25 years ago and yes, we have a large repertoire.

What are your favorite instruments?

Start with piano and you could easily add other instruments…

Piano and Flute is a beautiful instrument combination, but you could add cello to the piano to form a Piano Cello duo kind of like “The Piano Guys”.

May I also suggest other instrument combinations: Piano and Harp, Piano and String Bass (Jazz), Piano and Guitar, Piano and Violin…

Please pardon this peculiar impromptu pontification: One of my favorite yearly events to play is a birthday party at a very interesting location we affectionately call, “The Purple House.” This party was postponed for 2 years due to health department concerns. By popular demand this party is back and rescheduled this year on the celebrant’s exact birthday date. I will be there with The Purple House Jazz Trio: Piano, Guitar and String Bass.

The Dinner Dance

The Dinner Dance is all about dining and dancing. Just think of it:

 

  • Guests arrive to solo piano music during the cocktail hour.
  • Then doors open to the ballroom.
  • To the Piano we add String Bass and Drums. (already setup in the ballroom)
  • Guests entering the ballroom take a turn on the dance floor and are then seated to enjoy their first course with wine and conversation.
  • After their first course, guests are invited to the dance floor. The ensemble plays some easy ballroom dance tunes.  During this short dance set the table is cleared and set for the next course.
  • Then with a nod from the banquet captain, an announcement is made inviting guests to be seated for their next course; more wine and more conversation.
  • After the second course the trio starts up again this time playing more upbeat yet elegant dance music. Again, while guests are enjoying themselves on the dance floor the table is cleared and set for the next course.
  • Guests are seated, next course is served, and so on.

That’s a Dinner Dance:

Dining and dancing alternate throughout the evening and everyone has a good time :-)

Getting dressed up and showing some style is all part of planning any event. The juxtaposition of Location, Dress, Music, dynamically contribute as do decor & design. These elements are so much fun to play with when planning an event.

The Rat Pack

Speaking of “style” Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis and the rest of the “Rat Pack” established a style that inspired motion pictures like Oceans 8, Oceans 11, 12 & 13. Music and fashion are important design elements of these movies.

Here is the humorous song “Style” featuring Sinatra, Martin & Bing Crosby from the 1964 motion picture “Robin and the Seven Hoods”.

The Great American Song Book

“The Way you Look Tonight”, “Sway”, “Fly Me To The Moon” were popular contemporary songs (back in the day) that were made famous by performing artists such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and others. Throwing a party is a creative yet simple activity:

Invite people you like…

Provide food and music you like…

Combine and mix gently.

I think the reward for a host is knowing that their guests are having a good time.

In addition to being a DJ and Master of Ceremonies I am also a Pianist and lead a number of ensembles in performances throughout Southern California.

In this episode I relay a story of playing piano for 2 different holiday parties and the common thread that bound them.

The first was a spirited gathering involving the entire neighborhood of the Venice Canal Historic District complete with a flotilla of decorated boats that cruised up and down the canals.

The second was a Christmas house party; an open house. Neighbors and friends were coming and going. At any given time there were about 75 guests in the house. The kitchen was the focal point for food in a very large room with tall ceilings where the grand piano was.

Party Success

The hosts of both parties thoroughly enjoyed creating their party making sure their guests had everything they needed.

It might have been that hiring a caterer with service staff would have made the task of throwing these parties easier for the hosts. Though they worked hard to see to every detail, it was evident that their parties were a success and they had fun.

People need people…

There are many reasons to have a party; many reasons to be thankful. A special event provides a time and a place for guests to interact. Holidays and special occasions are anticipated as opportunities to get together. People need people, and bringing people together is well worth the effort of throwing a party or even a concert.

Artists are people who enjoy performing for people.

Much like race horses who love to run, artists need to exercise their creative muscles and perform.

Over the years of performing for events throughout Southern California Sheila and I have worked with many very talented artists. It’s hardly “work.” In bringing artists and people together and creating events, we have observed that “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts” and the effect created is huge!

On June 28, 2020 Sheila and I decided it was high time to perform again so we made arrangements to throw a concert on our front lawn and invite the neighborhood. At this event everyone had fun and conducted themselves responsibly maintaining a safe environment and no one got sick.

The above event demonstrated that good things happen when artists get together. So, I thought…

let’s do it again!

On the success of this summer event I made arrangements for another outdoor concert, this time at Faith Lutheran Church in Tujunga on Sunday September 20, 2020.
