Dinner party, dance party, birthday party, retirement party, or a fundraiser that forwards a good cause, an event is a communication.

A well-planned event provides an aesthetic distraction-free environment where guests interact. And stated or not, the event imparts a message.

In this episode, Tobey discusses 2 parties she enjoyed attending as a guest. Each had a unique purpose. Though different, these parties shared similar qualities that made them successful events.

Ladies and Gentlemen

Saturday November 10th the Elegant Music Jazz Trio performed for a formal dinner dance. Men wore tux. Women wore amazing cocktail dresses and evening attire. Guests knew how to have a good time and conducted themselves as ladies and gentlemen. So it was fitting that the Elegant Music Jazz Trio performed at the venerable Annandale Country Club for this elegant affair.

It is true that as musicians we play and interact with each other. In the moment (together as band members) we create the music on the spot, right before your eyes… or ears. We have a lot of fun doing this.

Audience Participation!

The audience plays an important roll in a performance. Their interaction with the performers and each other as dancers greatly contributes to the band’s performance. So there is a phenomena, a special communication between band and dancers that occurs, each inspiring the other. Well there was certainly a lot of that on Saturday night. The band members and I had a lot of fun interacting with the dancers who in many ways “conducted us” with their dancing.
We were all swingin’!

An eye for detail.

Below a brow furrowed in concentration is the eye of an artist in final preparation for a performance. In this case he is not only a participant in the performance, he has the additional responsibility of being the director and producer; the creator of his wife’s birthday party.

Everything is in place.

The party is in a beautiful backyard garden setting enchanted by tiny lights; full service restaurant stocked, staffed and poised to serve but what is missing? One would think he would be satisfied that all plans and preparations are complete. Center pieces, cases of wine, gifts. All of the objects were in place but his concentration did not abate. All objects remained exactly where they were placed; but what was missing? Something was missing.

Magic!

A look of satisfaction came to John’s face the moment the first guests arrived. The scene so carefully set had come to life. Immediately is attention was no longer on the objects. The success of his wife’s birthday party was assured as more guests arrived to interact with each other in the beautiful space he had created.

I first met John and Mary Lou when they were planning their wedding. John and Mary Lou are vocalists and as performers know what it takes to produce a successful event. Elegant Music provided Live Music, DJ Dance Music and Announcing for their wedding at the Braemar Country Club. It was such a pleasure to work with them then and now. Happy Birthday Mary Lou!
